Twelve-year-old Nick McIver enjoys helping his dad and some of the other islanders spy for Winston Churchill. Churchill has high hopes of defeating the Nazis, but he knows that Britain will need the help of the Americans to do so. In the meantime, Nick has another idea. With his old pal Gunner's assistance, he pulls his father's World War I plane out of its hiding place and restores it to its former glory. Then his father teaches him how to fly. Nick takes to the skies, discovering new ways to spy on the Nazis, and even plans a daring night raid to bomb their artillery building at the Nazi camp.

Nick is exhausted, barely surviving his raid, but he quickly learns that there is no resting for an adventurer in the middle of war. While he is gone, his old nemesis, the pirate Captain William Blood, returns for revenge. And he does so using his time machine. Leonardo da Vinci invented a time machine and created two of them; Captain Blood has one, and thanks to Nick's ancestor, Nick has the other. Now Captain Blood wants both of them. So he travels forward in time to 1940 and kidnaps Nick's little sister, Kate, taking her back to his time of 1781. If he wants his sister back alive, Nick must follow and exchange his time machine for Kate's life.

Nick quickly follows them back in time and finds that Kate hasn't sat idly in captivity. She eavesdrops on the pirates and learns of their plan --- an ingenious scheme to build a huge pirate army and take over the seas. Their first plan of attack is the French fleet commanded by Admiral de Grasse, traveling from the Caribbean to Virginia to help George Washington in the Revolutionary War. Nick knows from his history books that de Grasse assists with the Battle of Yorktown, which helps to end the war. If Captain Blood attacks de Grasse, and de Grasse never makes it to Virginia to help Washington, America will lose against the British. Which means America won't exist to help Britain defeat the Nazis in World War II. But if Nick goes back to 1781 to stop Captain Blood and help America win the Revolutionary War, it would mean he would be committing treason against his own country of England.
